In 1899, after a catastrophic ferry heist in Blackwater, veteran enforcer Arthur Morgan tries to hold the Van der Linde gang together as charismatic leader Dutch van der Linde spirals into paranoia.

⚡ Full Plot Refresher & Ending Recap (Red Dead Redemption 2)

  • Fleeing into the snowy Grizzlies and down to Valentine, Rhodes, and Saint Denis, Arthur Morgan, Hosea Matthews, Sadie Adler, and John Marston watch Dutch fall under the poisonous influence of traitor Micah Bell.
  • During the disastrous Saint Denis bank heist, Pinkerton agents kill Hosea and Lenny. After surviving a shipwreck on Guarma, Arthur is diagnosed with terminal tuberculosis (contracted earlier while collecting a debt from farmer Thomas Downes).
  • Facing his mortality, Arthur chooses redemption—absolving debts, helping Rains Fall, and insisting that John Marston take his wife Abigail and son Jack and run when the time comes.
  • Climax: Arthur discovers Micah has been a Pinkerton rat since returning from Guarma. When Dutch sides with Micah, Arthur stays behind on the mountain to hold off the Pinkertons and fight Micah with his dying breath so John Marston can escape to his family.
  • Epilogue (1907): Eight years later, John Marston builds Beecher's Hope ranch with Uncle and Charles, then tracks Micah to Mount Hagen—where a remorseful Dutch shoots Micah, allowing John to finish him off—inadvertently tipping off Pinkerton agent Edgar Ross to John's location.
🎯 Key Setup for Next Entry: Leads directly into the opening train ride of Red Dead Redemption 1 four years later!
Part 2 (1911–1914) • Chronological Finale

2. Red Dead Redemption 1 (2010)

Length / Scope: ~30h Story
🛡️ Open in Interactive Tracker

In 1911, Bureau agent Edgar Ross kidnaps John Marston's wife and son, forcing John to hunt down his former gang brothers—Bill Williamson, Javier Escuella, and Dutch van der Linde.

⚡ Full Plot Refresher & Ending Recap (Red Dead Redemption 1)

  • John tracks Bill Williamson from Fort Mercer into revolutionary Mexico alongside Marshall Leigh Johnson, Sadie-like rancher Bonnie MacFarlane, and legendary gunslinger Landon Ricketts, eliminating Bill and capturing/killing Javier Escuella.
  • Returning to Blackwater, John assists Ross in hunting down an unhinged Dutch van der Linde in Cochinay. Cornered on a cliffside, Dutch warns John ('When I'm gone, they'll just find another monster') and steps backward off the cliff to his death.
  • Reunited with Abigail and Jack at Beecher's Hope, John believes he is finally free—until Edgar Ross betrays him, marching the US Army onto the ranch. Sending Abigail and Jack away on horseback, John steps out of the barn doors alone into a firing squad so his family will never be hunted again.
  • 1914 Epilogue: Three years later, grown-up Jack Marston tracks retired agent Edgar Ross to a riverbank in Mexico and guns him down in a duel—completing the cycle of vengeance.
🎯 Key Setup for Next Entry: Together, RDR2 and RDR1 form the greatest Western story ever told in video games.
